The challenge

Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult is an organisation that helps companies and researchers across the world translate early stage research into commercially viable and investable therapies.

Tasked with defining a new online experience, our role on the project included: consultancy, user research, digital and content strategy, user experience architecture, visual design, front and back-end development, quality assurance and project management. The previous site was difficult to navigate, not fully responsive and designed in a way that did not illustrate the organisation's entire offering effectively.

Our approach

We worked and sprints and followed four project phases for this project:

  1. Understand - Working together with Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult we defined the vision, the roadmap and gathered        requirements for the new digital experience.
  2. Discover - During this phase we hypothesised, researched, formed insights, and tested an interactive prototype with users.
  3. Prepare - This phase saw us bring the site to life with animated iconography for each of the core capabilities and prepare all necessary files ready for production.
  4. Production - We carried out an iterative build in bi-weekly sprints. Testing and improving as we went.

As part of the project, we needed to understand each user-type and their full journey through the site. We began with a series of workshop exercises where we created a set of empathy maps and a customer journey framework for each type of user.

We then went on to review and refine the navigation, site structure and page templates through wireframe sketches. We used Catapult's existing digital brand guidelines to create our new interface designs. We carried out two rounds of user testing, one guerrilla user test at an industry event and one online user testing with a group of industry experts.

As a result of the user testing the proposed site structure went through several rounds of amends to make finding key content as simple as possible. Nomenclature was improved and page hierarchy issues addressed.

The technical build was accessible, fast and lightweight and was integrated on a LAMP stack with a Drupal CMS.

The result

We ran a training session with the content team to allow them to add new content to the site as and when they need to.
The site has been well received by Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult and their users.
